Umrah Tawaf
Tawaf is walking seven circuits around the Kaaba, keeping it on your left, starting from the line of the Black Stone (Hajar al-Aswad) and passing outside the Hatim. The tawaf of Umrah is a pillar (rukn) of Umrah.
- At the line of the Black Stone, face the Kaaba, raise your hands, say 'Bismillāhi Allāhu Akbar' and perform istilam: kiss or touch the Stone if possible; in crowds, point to it from a distance with your hand and kiss your hand. Istilam is Sunnah — never harm others to reach the Stone.
- It is Sunnah for men to walk briskly (ramal) in the first three circuits; it is left out when the Mataf is crowded.
- Touching the Rukn al-Yamani with the hand is recommended; it is not kissed. When it cannot be reached, Türkiye's Diyanet also mentions istilam from a distance, while Hanbali scholars and the Saudi fatwa committee say to pass by without pointing.
- The other two corners are not touched.
- Supplicate, remember Allah and recite the Qur'an during tawaf.
- If you are unsure about the number of circuits, build on the lower number.
